I've been reviewing some trends in offshore rig construction and have seen a stark shift in preferred floating rig type over the past couple of years.
In 2014 and 2015, 37 drillships are slated for delivery compared to just 14 semis according to Bloomberg data. This trend appears poised to continue for the foreseeable future as well. Recent floater orders have been dominated by drillships, with just a handful of harsh environment semis mixed in.
Clearly both contractors and operators are opting for drillships over semis. I understand the advantage of self-propulsion, but don’t semis provide a more stable drilling platform due to superior motion characteristics? Why has there been such a definitive shift in favor of drillships over semis when it comes to the floating rig business?
